The Origin of Movember

Every great movement starts somewhere…  Sometimes even over a pint.

Back in 2003 in Melbourne, Australia, two friends, Travis Garone and Luke Slattery, were chatting in a pub when they noticed something: the once‑glorious moustache (hello 70’s… we’re looking at you!) had completely disappeared from fashion. They joked about bringing it back, wondering if they could convince a few mates to grow one just for fun.

They found 30 brave volunteers, called them “Mo Bros” (moustache + bros), and set one simple rule: start November clean‑shaven, then grow a moustache for 30 days.
No beards. No cheats. Just pure moustache dedication.

But here’s where things got serious and meaningful.
Inspired by the success of Breast Cancer Awareness Month for women, they realised there was nothing quite like it for men’s health.
So they decided to use their newly hairy upper lips as conversation starters about topics many men found hard to talk about:

Prostate cancer

Testicular cancer

Men’s mental health and suicide prevention

Their fun challenge soon became a movement with a mission.

Within a few years, that small group in Melbourne had turned into a global campaign.
The Movember Foundation was born: a registered charity dedicated to raising funds and awareness for men’s health, supporting hundreds of research and community projects across more than 20 countries.

The name? Simple: Mo + November = Movember.

What started as a tongue‑in‑cheek bet between friends has become one of the world’s most recognised health movements. Every November, millions of people, men and women alike, join in.
Some grow moustaches, others walk, run, cycle or simply start conversations that could save a life.

And while the moustaches are still glorious (and occasionally questionable 😄), the heart of Movember has always been about something much deeper:

Making it easier for men to talk about their health, get checked early, and know they’re not alone. 💙

The Importance of Movember

Honestly? Talking about health isn’t always easy, especially for men.

Even today, far too many men still suffer in silence, put off going to the doctor, or avoid talking about what’s really going on, whether it’s physical or emotional.

Here’s the reality:

Men are more likely to ignore early symptoms of serious illness.

They are less likely to seek mental health support.

And statistically, they have a shorter life expectancy than women, often because of preventable causes.

That’s where Movember steps in:
Not with judgement, but with moustaches, movement and open conversations.

Instead of saying:

Movember says:

The power of Movember is that it turns a simple action (growing a moustache, moving your body, or starting a chat) into a catalyst for something bigger:

Awareness: Getting health topics out in the open.

Fundraising: Supporting life-saving research and programmes.

Behavioural change: Making it normal (and encouraged!) for men to care for themselves and each other.

It’s not just about moustaches. It’s about shifting the culture.

Making it okay to say:

Movember helps create what we at ALGSO value deeply:
A safe, supportive, and often light-hearted space where men can take charge of their health without shame or fear.
From joining a class to having a chat after sport, or getting checked “just in case”, every step forward is a win.

Retro-style feature of a man with a huge moustache with various comments around the photo such as: Men's health matters, and Moustache Mood, etc.

Because real strength isn’t about toughing it out.
It’s about showing up, speaking up, and sticking around, for yourself, your mates, and the people who love you.

How YOU Can Show Your Support During Movember

a) With Moustaches

Let’s start with the obvious: the moustache.
The legendary, glorious, often questionable upper-lip accessory that made Movember what it is.

Here’s the idea:
You start clean-shaven on 1 November, and then grow a moustache for 30 days.
No beards, no goatees, just a proper Mo.

Why?
Because it gets people talking.
About prostate cancer. About testicular cancer. About mental health. About why men’s health matters.

And whether you’re growing a handlebar, a Dalì, a Freddie Mercury (80’s fans, we see you), a pencil-thin, or something… experimental, the message is the same:

Want to amplify your ‘stache power?

Invite your mates to grow one too: make it a team challenge.

Set up a fundraiser or donation link.

Take selfies (yes, we said it), post them online, and use #Movember.

Tag organisations that support men’s health awareness and sport and cancer recovery, like ALGSO (hi, yep, that’s us 👋… subtle right?).

Because the more people see it, the more they talk.
And the more we talk, the more lives we can change… and save.

b) For Those Who Can’t (or Don’t Want to) Grow a Moustache

Good news: Movember is not just for Mo Bros.
If you can’t grow a moustache or just don’t fancy the look, you’re still 100% in.

Here are other ways to get involved:

Move for Movember

Start a “Move” challenge. Go for daily walks. Stretch for 5 minutes a day. Cycle 60 km over the month.
You don’t need Lycra (unless that’s your thing). You just need to move.

💡 Want inspiration? Join a support group like ALGSO, where movement and connection go hand in hand.

Start Conversations

Slap on a fake moustache. Pin a badge to your jacket. Draw one on your mask.
Whatever gets people to ask:

Then, boom: conversation started.

Give or Give Back

Donate to a men’s health cause.
Organise a charity bake sale (bonus points for moustache-shaped cookies).
Host a small event or invite friends to talk about mental health.

Be There for Someone

Sometimes, showing support means checking in with a mate, a brother, a colleague.

That one sentence can change everything.

However you get involved, you’re helping to change the face of men’s health.
So whether you “grow a Mo” or “make a move”, do it your way, but don’t sit this one out.
Because every action, no matter how small, helps create a world where men feel seen, heard, and supported.

Why Sport is Important During and After Cancer

When you think of cancer treatment, you might picture hospital visits, medication, or surgery.
But what comes after (or even alongside) treatment is just as important.
It’s called recovery, and one of the most powerful tools we have for it… is movement.

Not extreme workouts.
Not pushing through pain.
Just intentional, adapted, human movement, at your own pace, with the right support.
Yes, we’re talking about that dreaded, drum-roll-worthy word: sport.

What the science says:

We’re not just saying this because we love a good class (though we do).
The evidence is clear:

Sport helps reduce cancer-related fatigue: one of the most common and persistent symptoms during and after treatment.

It improves mental health, boosting mood and reducing anxiety and depression.

It supports your immune function, aerobic fitness and muscle strength.

A growing body of research shows that structured physical activity after a cancer diagnosis is linked to improved survival outcomes.

Psst! Check out our past article: 5 Ways Exercise Helps with Cancer Recovery for more detailed info on this topic.

But what does “sport” actually mean here?

We’re not talking about running marathons or bench pressing a fridge.
At ALGSO, “sport” means:

Moving with purpose and joy.

Working with coaches trained in oncology support.

Finding the level and pace that work for your body: whether that’s fencing, tennis, strength classes or a good group stretch.

Being surrounded by people who understand what you’re going through, even if no words are spoken.

💙 At ALGSO, sport = support

We’re proud to be a Luxembourg Cancer Support Group that doesn’t just talk about wellness. We move for it.
Our classes are designed for people living with and beyond cancer, including men and women of all ages and fitness levels.

And it’s not “just” about the movement.
It’s about:

Reclaiming your body

Rebuilding your confidence

Restoring your energy

Creating connection: with others who get it

Sport is healing and empowering

Whether you’re in the middle of treatment, adjusting to a new normal, or rediscovering your strength:
Sport can be your anchor.

It’s not a punishment.
It’s not a performance.
It’s a way back into your body on your terms.

And we’ll be with you every step, stretch and sweat along the way.

Movember in Action: Screening, Support, and Showing Up

Movember isn’t just about moustaches, or even just about cancer.
It’s about the whole picture of men’s health.
And that means shining a light on some often-overlooked but deeply important topics:

Screening & Prevention:  Early Action Saves Lives

One of Movember’s biggest messages is simple but life-saving:

Whether it’s for prostate cancer, testicular changes, or even a general health check-up: catching things early can make all the difference.

Unfortunately, too many men delay or skip screenings. It might be fear, stigma, time, or just thinking, “It’ll sort itself out.”

But regular check-ups are one of the most powerful tools we have in cancer prevention.

At ALGSO, we support this message fully, not only by encouraging screening, but by being a space where men feel supported in taking that step.

Because looking after yourself isn’t selfish.
It’s strong. It’s smart. It’s survival.

Mental Health: Yes, This Counts Too

Movember is also about what’s happening inside.

Mental health is just as crucial as physical health. Especially for men facing illness, recovery, or just the everyday weight of expectation.

Men are statistically less likely to ask for help, talk about their feelings, or seek therapy.
But that doesn’t mean they’re not struggling.

This is why Movember funds mental health programmes across the world, and it’s why ALGSO creates spaces where men and women can move, talk, or just be, without pressure.

Sometimes, support looks like a deep conversation.
Sometimes, it looks like showing up for a class and stretching in silence with others who get it.

However it looks for you, we’re here for it. And for you.

Community & Culture: From Lip Hair to Global Impact

Here’s the amazing thing: a moustache (yes, that odd little patch of upper lip fluff) sparked a movement that now spans the globe.

From Melbourne to Luxembourg, Movember changed the culture around how we talk about men’s health.

At ALGSO, we’re proud to carry that spirit forward,  but with action.
We don’t just raise awareness…
We run classes, build bonds, and create programmes that meet individuals where they are, whether they’re in treatment, recovery, or simply looking to reconnect with their body.

Our community is built on movement, and made for men and women of all ages, backgrounds and fitness levels.

Every Step Counts: However You Show Up, It Matters

You don’t have to run a marathon.
You don’t have to grow a perfect moustache.
You don’t have to be loud, or sporty, or anything you’re not.

You just have to show up in your own way.

Grow a moustache? Brilliant.

Join a walk or fitness class? Fantastic.

Send a message to a mate and check in on him? That counts too.

Read this article and learn something new? Yep, even that.

Because every small action helps shift the culture, raise awareness, and make men’s health visible.

You’re not just supporting a campaign.
You’re part of a story.
And trust us: your chapter matters.

Together, We Change the Face of Men’s Health

Movember isn’t just about growing a moustache.
It’s about growing a movement. A message. And maybe even a bit of momentum.

This November, we’re asking you to show up, in any way that feels right for you.
Whether you’re growing a moustache, lacing up your trainers, reaching out to a friend, or finally booking that check-up: you’re making men’s health visible.

At ALGSO, we see every one of those actions as powerful.

You grow a moustache? You spark a conversation.

You join a class? You build resilience.

You move your body? You honour your recovery.

You show up for a mate? You change a life.

You send this article to someone? You spread the awareness.

Here in Luxembourg, ALGSO proudly stands as a support group, a cancer recovery community, and a firm believer in the healing power of movement.
From fencing to fitness, walking to weight training: we offer classes tailored to support anyone facing or recovering from cancer.

Because sport isn’t just physical…
It’s social, emotional, even spiritual.

It builds strength.

It builds connection.

It builds you: back to yourself.

So this Movember, do it your way:

Grow a Mo

Move your body

Join a support group (yes, even ours)

Check in with yourself, and with others

You don’t have to be loud. You just have to be present.

Because when we show up, for ourselves and for each other, we change the face of men’s health.

Together.
Step by step.
Mo by Mo.
