Our Mission:
Our mission is to empower individuals affected by cancer, fostering recovery and resilience through customised sports classes and supportive networks.
Charel Trierweiler – Founding Member and President of the ALGSO
We provide a safe, welcoming environment where cancer warriors and survivors can regain physical strength, boost self-confidence, and build meaningful connections.
No matter the stage you are at, whether newly diagnosed, actively fighting or ensuring a relapse-free lifestyle, our #ALGSOfamily welcomes you with open arms.
How it All Began:
From an inspired idea, to a thriving community.

At ALGSO, our story began in 2009 with a simple yet powerful idea: to create a safe and empowering space where cancer patients could rebuild their physical, emotional, and social well-being.
Charel, our current president, was studying sports medicine at DSHS (Deutsche Sporthochschule) in Cologne. He decided to specialise in rehabilitation and prevention in oncology after his mother’s cancer diagnosis.
He conducted his master’s research at the Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg (CHL) on the physical, psychological and social benefits of physical activity (within a hospitalised context) during the chemotherapy phase of cancer treatment.
What struck him the most was the overwhelming success regarding physical developments, as well as big gains of self-confidence. He also noted that many people expressed a desire to continue the physical activity, but didn’t feel ready (physically, mentally or socially) to join a fitness/dance/swim club.
His tutor, Dr Freerk Baumann, showed him that in Germany, at that time, 1,500 oncology sports groups already existed outside of a hospital context.
So Charel decided to create Luxembourg’s very first oncology sports group (us!).
Thanks to the help and support of Dr Caroline Duhem and Dr Marc Diederich, he was able to found the ALGSO: a safe space where cancer warriors could continue their physical activity in classes led by physiotherapists, while being surrounded by people in similar situation.
The ALGSO Today:
The ALGSO is run by highly motivated volunteers who either work in the field of oncology, had a cancer themselves, or had someone dear to them who was a member.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their passion and dedication, without which, we would not function.
Today, we remain committed to fostering a community where every member feels supported, inspired, and empowered. We continue to expand our reach, helping individuals not just survive but truly live.
What we Offer:
Our sports programs are designed to meet the needs of every individual, whether you’re undergoing treatment or are years into recovery. We provide:
What Makes us Unique:
A Community of Support:
At ALGSO, every participant becomes part of a larger family. Whether finding solace in shared experiences, celebrating physical milestones, or forming lasting friendships, our members inspire us every day
We all go through the same stuff when it comes to dealing with the secondary effects of the treatment. It’s a space to exchange, to motivate each other, to laugh and to find the solidarity that helps us to go forward.
Katia – Member of the ALGSO
For me, the ALGSO is a place where I found people who understand me and who lived the same things as I did. It’s a second family.
